OEM services for managing complex electronic equipment returns streams

Desktop computer assessments under an OEM warranty programme

Sims Recycling Solutions can deliver tailored solutions for complex OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) returns streams, designed to maximise value, enhance control and minimise environmental impacts.

Over many years, Sims Recycling Solutions has worked with many of the world's largest electronics OEM's to develop a range of systems and services to accommodate all types of surplus material streams including:

  • In warranty returns
  • Trade ins
  • Channel returns and rotations
  • Demo and loan, try and buy
  • Off lease
  • Exhibition and show
  • Excess and obsoleteService swaps (Manufacturing, channel, EMS)
  • Service swaps
  • Internal administrative equipment
  • Production waste & defects

Each of these streams contains a different proportion of reusable and waste equipment. Sims Recycling Solutions can evaluate equipment when it arrives against a range of criteria set by its clients. We regularly assess returned equipment for:

  • Compliance with terms and conditions of sale
  • Availability of working spares needed by clients' service departments
  • Functionality of components
  • Cosmetic fault codes
  • Systemic manufacturing faults for new product offerings

The results of these testing and screening activities are used by our clients to make value enhancing decisions concerning how best to dispose of returns.

Sims Recycling Solutions works closely with clients to help select a mix of equipment re-use that maximises their financial returns. These include:

Brand-standard re-use

Some clients identify parts they require for field service activities, which can be pulled on arrival and sent for brand standard re-manufacturing. This avoids acquiring expensive parts from brokers, and in one case allowed a client to reduce their “last-time-buy” policy from 5 years expected demand to 2 years, saving $100m in the first year.

Whole equipment sales

Some clients allow certain types of equipment to be resold in tested-working condition, and this usually results in the highest value.

Component recovery

Where equipment is too old or reuse is not permitted by brand drivers, some components can be recovered for sale after being tested as working. Sims Recycling Solutions recover all types of component parts for this purpose, right down to individual integrated circuit boards (ICs).

Materials recycling

Where none of the above options are possible, equipment is mechanically recycled to produce commodity materials such as plastics, ferrous, non-ferrous and precious metals which are used in the production of new products.

Each of our recycling centres has its own sales capabilities for material commodities. Sims also has centralised sales departments who are able to realise high returns for clients due to the volume of materials being recovered through our 230 recycling centres worldwide.

Sims Recycling Solutions' ability to perform screening, testing and recycling activities at multiple sites around the world, together with our bespoke process control systems allow the optimal processing of your surplus equipment streams in terms of value, control and environmental stewardship.
